Every November at Grace Church, we take time to recognize Adoption Awareness Month. It’s more than a calendar event; it’s a clear reminder of one of the greatest realities in the Christian life: spiritual adoption.
Before we knew Christ, we were lost—bound by sin, separated from God, and without hope. But in His mercy, God didn’t leave us there. He sent His Son, Jesus, to redeem us, “so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:5). Through Christ, we’ve been rescued from the realm of darkness and welcomed into God’s kingdom, and even into His very own family (Colossians 1:13). We are now His children—heirs of a glorious inheritance and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17–18). This truth anchors our hope, no matter the struggles we face in this life.
Adoption, then, is not just a beautiful earthly act; it’s a picture of the gospel.
But this month is also an opportunity to look outward. Around the world—and right here in our own city—thousands of children are in need of loving homes. While some have lost parents through tragedy, many have been orphaned by neglect, abandonment, or abuse. These children are not just statistics; they are individuals made in God’s image, longing for stability, care, and love. Their greatest need, though, even if they don’t recognize it, is to hear the gospel and to believe it, so they might be adopted into God’s family.
As believers who have experienced the grace of being adopted by our Heavenly Father, we are called to extend that grace in tangible ways. For some, that may mean opening your home to a child through adoption or foster care. Could God be leading you to embrace a child as your own, just as He has embraced you?
Others may not be in a place to adopt, but your role is no less vital. You can support adoptive and foster families with prayer, encouragement, practical help, or financial assistance. These are great ways to help your brothers and sisters in Christ to serve these precious children.
Whether through adopting, fostering, or supporting those who do, you can demonstrate God’s love to the vulnerable. In a world that often overlooks or discards children, we, as the adopted sons and daughters of God, have an opportunity to reflect this same love through adoption.
