Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” –John 8:12
One of the most vivid illustrations Jesus used to describe Himself was that of light in a dark place. Just as someone in a dark room is powerless and vulnerable without a light, so are we powerless and vulnerable in the face of sin and death apart from the light of Jesus’ person and work. Indeed, the good news of the gospel is that through His work on the cross, that darkness in us is defeated and will one day be totally removed. As wonderful as that truth is, Jesus’ work goes beyond paying the debt we owed for our sin and promising to restore us to Himself one day; He makes us to be “little” lights that shine forth the light of His gospel to others (Matt 5:14–16) while we await His glorious return.
