Love has existed from eternity past. In other words, it has never not existed. We know this is true because love is an integral part of the character of God. 1 John 4:16 is clear: “God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him.” God’s essence is love and all His attributes operate together in perfect harmony with His love. God’s love is not merely an affection or emotion, but an attribute of His character that undergirds all that He accomplishes. His love has motivated the most awesome and powerful acts ever accomplished and shines in all His creation— even the shaping of our very souls is a declaration of His love.
Of course, the ultimate expression of God’s love is reflected in the gift of Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
In light of the immutable and lavish love of God, our response ought to be to love Him preeminently in return. Indeed, our love for God should be demonstrated in our worship, service, and action.
This month, we have an opportunity to show this kind of love by encouraging our missionaries through Christmas in September. Our missionaries serve the Lord sacrificially as they look to fulfill the Great Commission. They have chosen to uproot their lives and take daring steps of faith to proclaim the gospel in every corner of the earth.
Christmas in September is a ministry intended to bless and support our missionaries during the Christmas season. While we look forward to gathering together with our families during the holidays, many of our missionaries spend Christmas in the field away from their families. Each September, we gather notes of encouragement and financial gifts from our church family, which are then compiled and given to our missionary families in December.
This year, we have a new and creative way to send a Christmas greeting of love and devotion to our missionaries. Our church family is now able to create digital Christmas cards by uploading a family photo to our website and customizing it with a personal Christmas message. Simply select the family to whom you would like to write, include a personal message, and upload a picture of your family.
For those who would like to support our missionaries still further, please prayerfully consider giving a financial gift that will go toward making Christmas for our missionary families exceedingly special.
“And above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14). May we reflect the love of Christ in our commitment to prayer and care to our families serving throughout the world.
Visit the Patio table on any Sunday morning in September for information about how to send a digital card, instructions on sending a card to our classified missionaries, or to handwrite a card for our missionaries.
