Welcome to Summer Sessions! While we are not meeting in person, we wanted to provide some practical encouragement in the weeks ahead to help keep our eyes on Christ by focusing on His character and His work as revealed in the pages of Scripture.
Dr. MacArthur has written about the common fallacy that because humans are finite beings, we tend to perceive the infinite in light of our own limitations. His encouragement is for us to reach beyond those limitations to think exalted thoughts about God.
“The only way to know what God is like is to discover what He has revealed about Himself in Scripture. The revelation of God’s nature falls into different categories of attributes, which in their totality define His character… Knowing what God is like is foundational to knowing God Himself. And knowing God is the essence of being a Christian.”
- John MacArthur, Our Awesome God, p. 8-9
So to grow in our understanding of God, each Monday in June and August there will be a short devotion posted online from some of the leaders in the different women’s ministries at Grace Church. This will not be an exhaustive study of God’s character but a glimpse at some of His attributes including His faithfulness, holiness, omniscience, sovereignty, and mercy. It’s designed as an encouragement for each woman to grow personally in her knowledge of God by seeking Him in the pages of Scripture.
In July, there will be a 4-week study through the book of Philippians covering one chapter per week but with the same goal of knowing Christ. Each Monday there will be a video greeting leading into an audio lecture on that week’s chapter, along with a lesson that you can download and work through on your own or with your family or friends. The purpose is to provide a structure and a format to help you study Scripture on your own each day. Then if you choose, you can organize a time to meet with other women to enjoy fellowship through sharing what you’ve learned.
There are many wonderful books and resources on God’s attributes, but these four will be a strong support to your personal study of Scripture.
Our prayer is that we may be different women at the end of the summer as God shows Himself to us through His Word. May He bless you as you pursue Him.
“My determined purpose is that I may know Him—that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His person more strongly and more clearly.” (AMPC)
