“And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left…” -Jonah 4:11
“Salvation belongs to the Lord!” – Jonah 2:9
Vacation Bible School has been a part of our church family life for several years. Over the past seven years, Grace Community Church has hosted thousands of children who have attended this one-week program where they learn the good news of the gospel. Each year, hundreds of volunteers devote a week of their year to serve these children and their families as small group leaders, game leaders, and craft and snack-time assistants. While this week is packed with fun crafts, games, and skits, our desire as a church is to teach children from a young age their need of a Savior.
For this reason, this year’s VBS theme is centered around the attribute of God’s mercy as displayed in the book of Jonah. For many in Christian circles, this Old Testament narrative is considered merely an interesting fish-tale of a wayward prophet. However, we understand that the truths taught in this book are deeply convicting and heart-revealing as we learn about a disobedient prophet who was unable to circumvent God’s plan. During the week of VBS, children will hear about God’s unrelenting mercy extended to undeserving sinners, and our prayer is that they will see their own need for grace and forgiveness.
Today begins the start of registration for VBS. As parents sign up their children to attend, and as our team prepares for this jam-packed week, we ask that you join us in prayer that God’s word will be clearly taught, His name will be glorified through our service, and that children and families will come to have a saving knowledge of Him. Some children have made a profession of faith after hearing the gospel at VBS, and there are families who have joined Grace Church because of how excited and engaged their kids were during this wonderful week.
As Jonah 2:9 states, “Salvation belongs to the Lord!”, and we pray and depend entirely on Him that He will accomplish His saving purpose through VBS this year.
