This year marks a remarkable milestone in the life of Grace Community Church—the 50th anniversary of Special Ministries. What began in 1975 as a small effort to serve those with disabilities has become one of the most enduring and Christ-exalting ministries in our church.
Under the leadership of Dr. Sam Britten—a Cal State Northridge professor and one of our early elders—the ministry began by introducing sign language into our worship services and training others in basic ASL. Alongside faithful men like Gene Newman and Greg Barshaw, Dr. Britten helped equip our church to care for those with unique physical and mental challenges. Their efforts soon developed into GRACE Club (Grace Recreational Activity Center for the Exceptional), a Tuesday evening outreach that provided biblical instruction, fellowship, and joy-filled recreation for those with special needs.
In 1979, the Lord added another remarkable chapter to this story. When Joni Eareckson came to Los Angeles to film her movie, Joni, she lived next door to the church and became a beloved part of the ministry. That Thanksgiving, our congregation presented her with a specially equipped wheelchair van—an expression of Christian love that allowed her to serve the Lord more freely and effectively.
From those humble beginnings, the Lord has greatly expanded the reach of Special Ministries. Today, this work provides biblical teaching, discipleship, transportation, wheelchairs, summer camps, and a wide range of resources for individuals and families affected by disability. By God’s grace, Grace Church has also become a unique model for churches around the world seeking to minister faithfully to this precious community.
We are especially thankful for the leadership of Pastor Rick McLean, who has shepherded Special Ministries with unwavering devotion for more than three decades. His faithfulness—and that of so many volunteers—stands as a testimony to the compassion of Christ and the power of His Word.
On January 16, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Special Ministries with a volunteer appreciation banquet, honoring those whom the Lord has used to lay this enduring foundation.
We praise God for His faithfulness through these fifty years and for the privilege of serving those made in His image with such care and love. As we look to the future, we invite you to partner with us so that this vital ministry may continue to proclaim the gospel and demonstrate the love of Christ to those with special needs. Your prayerful support and financial gifts help provide the resources, transportation, and opportunities that God uses to change lives for eternity.
With deep gratitude,
The Elders of Grace Community Church
