A New Year of Faith Promise

Faith Promise is an opportunity for our church to prayerfully consider what we might commit to giving to our missionaries monthly, beyond our regular giving.

In late 2007, Grace Church’s international outreach was facing several financial challenges. Missionary families were facing budget shortfalls due to fluctuating exchange rates, pastoral training centers were expanding and required more funding, and six new missionary families were preparing to head overseas. It was then that, under Pastor John’s leadership, Grace Church began a new initiative to faithfully support its missionaries through those challenging times—this initiative was called Faith Promise.

The idea had four simple components. First, Grace Church members would be asked to prayerfully consider giving over and above their regular giving. Second, each person would decide before the Lord what amount they would give in the coming year, trusting God to provide—even if they did not know where the money would come from. Third, this faith promise would be written anonymously on a tear-out card, like the one in your hands today. Finally, as God provided, we would give gratefully in response to His provision.

This was not blind faith, but faith anchored in two biblical principles. First, the local church has a responsibility to support missionaries as they labor for the spread of the gospel. Second, we can be confident that God will provide for what He calls us to do.

In May 2008, the first Faith Promise campaign was launched, and in the very first week, one million dollars was pledged. What Pastor John could not have foreseen was that, after the first Sunday, a donor stepped forward and agreed to match that one million dollars, dollar for dollar, as it was given. By the time the campaign ended in April 2009, Grace Church members had given over one million dollars toward the spread of the gospel—which was then matched to more than two million dollars because of that donor’s gift.

The seeds of this initiative have now grown into nineteen consecutive years of Faith Promise. Because unreached people groups and the strengthening of the global church are close to God’s heart, we trust that He will provide once again in the coming year.

This Sunday and next, you will find a Faith Promise commitment card in Grace Today. We encourage you to prayerfully consider how you might sacrifice over and above your regular giving. You may not know where these funds will come from, but we invite you to pray in faith about a specific amount you will give if the Lord provides. When you are ready—this week or next—write this amount on the tear-out card in Grace Today, place the card in the offering bag, and begin praying that God will provide.

May we be challenged again this year to pray fervently, give generously, and care for our missionaries in this very practical way. We look forward to seeing what God will do over the next twelve months as we partner together for the advance of the gospel around the world.

There is no one like You among the gods, O Lord,
Nor are there any works like Yours.
All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And they shall glorify Your name.
